In accordance with Richard Barrett, an author, speaker and internationally recognised thought leader on the evolution of human values in business and society, we all are on an evolutionary journey of personal development.
Barrett suggests that during the course of our lives we are moving, or supposed to be moving from one to the other stage of psychological development. These stages represent the evolution of human psyche and human consciousness There are 7 stages: Serving, Conforming, Differentiating, Individuating, Self-actualizing, Integrating and Serving. Each stage requires satisfaction of particular psychological needs. You can see them on the picture provided. And if only we could travel smoothly from one to the next one level of our psycological development, we would probably be living in a beautiful world full of love and joy. But! There is a BUT!
We go through the first 3 stages of psychological development quite naturally, trying to satisfy, what Abraham Maslow called our Basic needs. And Barrett calls the needs of our ego.
If we manage to master our basic needs effectively we can move to the individuating stage smoothly. And we reach the individuating stage. The stage when we often re-evaluate our values and receive a CALL for transformation. Call from our soul which is looking for satisfaction of needs for meaning, purpose and fulfillment. At this stage we start asking ourselves some difficult questions. And often it take years and years to find the answers. And if and when we found those answers we can move further towards satisfying our Growth needs or as Barrett called them the needs of our soul.
What our success on individuating stage depends on? How can we make sure that when reaching it we can easily find the way further?
The thing is that if we do not manage to master our basic needs: our physiological needs, needs for love and belonging and needs for recognition and acknowledgement they become, what Maslow called our deficiency needs, which like anchors will be constantly puling us back. These deficiency needs cause development of limiting beliefs like: I don’t have enough, I am not loved or don’t belong, I am not good enough. And the rest of our lives we will be spending on trying hard to satisfy those needs, making our choices and decisions through the paradigms of our limiting beliefs.
Of course, all of this is happening or will be happening subconsciously. Without us realizing why we are not happy, why we can’t find meaning and fulfillment. Why our soul is crying for joy and we can’t respond to this call? We are not aware!
So, to increase our self-awareness is the first step. The second step is to identify what deficiency needs we have that need to be mastered, to allow us to move forward in our personal development journey. Then to create and practice right strategies to turn limiting beliefs, caused by our deficiency needs, into more powerful and supportive beliefs. And finally to take first steps forward towards meeting the needs of our souls.
